WhiteWall lab:
Studio visit with a pro - Sabine Wild

Back

At WhiteWall, artist Sabine Wild has found exactly what she’s been searching for: an unbeatable combination of perfect artwork delivery and the highest quality.

The demands on the work of a photo lab are high, the quality of the prints and the mounting variations have to fit together. The optimum balance of the colours is also key, and plays a very important role in Wild’s works. The perfect reproduction of colours ensures that the final product reflects what the artist wanted to express through her photography.

Another important requirement of a photo lab is the professional management of the delivery of the finished artworks. This may not appear important at first glance, but is particularly important to Sabine Wild. "The delivery of works is particularly important, because some of my works must be sent across the world".

Wild’s success extends far beyond Germany’s borders and her works are admired and sold internationally. The delivery of fragile art works is always a delicate issue, the further the delivery distance, the more transportation risks that arise. Artists, however, should not have to worry about these issues – and, thanks to WhiteWall, they don’t have to: "The works are delivered to the customers safely and in specially designed packaging, without me as an artist having to deal with the whole process".

Sabine Wild has been working together with WhiteWall for years and is proud of the good relationship and the direct contact with the photo lab. She first came into contact with WhiteWall when her work was included in the portfolio of the LUMAS edition gallery. After personally visiting the laboratory in Frechen, near Cologne, Germany, she decided to work exclusively with WhiteWall in the future, and continues to do so to this day.

Sabine Wild’s path to professional photography was not planned and did not follow the standard trajectory. You could say that she arrived at her goal after a detour, which has a wonderful, enriching influence on her work today. As a student of German and linguistics, she worked for five years in the public relations department of the National Architectural Association. There she was responsible for the area of event photography and during this time discovered her love and talent for the field.

Architecture plays a very important role in her life and in her work. Horizontal and vertical lines, blurriness, and urban movement, which lie at the heart of her photographs, are typical for the artist and show the viewer the imposing dimensions of town architecture.

During her studies Sabine Wild continued to work in architect offices, where she was primarily responsible for the companies’ software needs. These areas of specialisation are brought together in her work: Digital photography and picture editing. Her fascination for working on computers is combined with a passion for architectural photography and creates in her work a positive symbiosis of the two worlds.

Interview with Sabine Wild

What do you expect from a photo laboratory with regards to quality?

A lot: The colour balance has to be right, the works have to be delivered without damage, the laboratory has to work reliably, and delivery must take place at a specific time. It’s also particularly important that, in the case of a problem, a mutually acceptable solution is found as soon as possible. The delivery of works is particularly important to me, because some of my works have to be sent across the world. The works are delivered to the customers safely and in specially designed packaging. If there is and damage from the transportation, the photography is produced again and re-delivered without objections. As an artist, I don’t have to deal with the process.

How did you become aware of the WhiteWall photo lab?

The LUMAS editions gallery has been working together with WhiteWall for many years. As my works are included in their portfolio I have known the laboratory since the beginning of my cooperation with the gallery. I once travelled to Frechen, Germany, the home of WhiteWall, and visited the location. It’s fair to say that we have a long history together! Ever since I got to know WhiteWall through LUMAS I have had all of my works have produced there.

Which finishing techniques bring out the best in your photography?

I personally prefer the presentations under acrylic glass for my works. Acrylic glass mounting produces the best results for my colours; they have a more brilliant luminosity than behind a matte variation. The cover gives the picture an additional depth, in particular with the 6mm thick acrylic glass, which givens my works an additional dimension.

Many of your works are large formats. When framing or finishing large formats, what is particularly important?

The problem is often that the picture carrier deforms and becomes concave. This means that the image cannot be placed flat on the wall and it’s difficult to present the photography appropriately. WhiteWall fastens the entire underside of the image with an aluminium hanging strip, which has a stabilising effect and prevents deformation – even large formats remain stable.

What convinced you to work together with WhiteWall?

WhiteWall’s perfect quality and reliability and their delivery know-how. WhiteWall meets all of the demands that I have in the area of quality. During production, everything that is important to me is taken care of. Above all, I can be sure that everything runs smoothly and I don’t have to worry about the different stages in the process. The whole organisation process doesn’t concern me.

What do you think of the clarity of the WhiteWall homepage? Does the procedure match your expectations?

WhiteWall now offers a price table on the website, which is visible even before uploading photographs. This is something I had left was missing previously. I now find the entire process impressive. Upload photographs, select a mounting or framing variation, determine the size, enter a delivery address, pay, and you’re finished!

In your opinion, how is WhiteWall different to other photo laboratories?

WhiteWall offers perfect quality at unbelievably good prices. In combination with the certified delivery, this is unbeatable.

You use the service as a professional photographer. Why is WhiteWall just as suitable for amateurs as it is for professionals?

Every photographer wants his or her work to be presented perfectly, regardless of whether they are doing it for a hobby or a career. WhiteWall does not differentiate.

Would you recommend WhiteWall to other artists?

Without doubt, yes. The quality is brilliant, the laboratory works just as I want it to, and the service is great. As an artist I feel well looked after and taken seriously. The experience of the laboratory means that long discussions and explanations are unnecessary. They know what they are doing.
